SOUNDS ALL AROUND US!

A great big thank you goes out to Miss Hickman, the instrumental music teacher at North Strabane Intermediate School, for sharing her love of music with our team members.  On December 6, 2012, the students enjoyed learning about woodwind, percussion, brass, and string instruments and how each of them makes sound.  It was amazing to listen to Miss Hickman play numerous instruments as she described how each instrument has its own unique way of producing sounds.  From a vibrating surface to a vibrating reed, she helped us understand how the instruments produce high and low pitched sounds, and loud and soft sounds.  Her musical talent is a wonderful gift, and we're so thankful she shared it with us.

Mix-It-Up Day at NSIS!

It was so much fun to play games with our sixth grade friends.
There were smiles all around as the girls spent some quality time together.
How about a game of Checkers?
Building......that's what we do!!  The structures were A-"MAZE"-ING!

On November 21, 2012, the fifth and sixth grade classes spent time "mixing-it-up" as they had a chance to interact and acquaint themselves with students from another grade.  The students had fun playing games and sharing some smiles.  A good time was had by all of the students and staff.

Constructing Creativity & Learning

(Press the arrow button to play the slideshow.)

Students on Team Nautilus created a Native American home of their choice for a project in our unit in social studies class.  Students created pueblos, wigwams, hogans, teepees, and longhouses and presented them to their class for an oral speaking grade.

It was very interesting to see how each student tackled the project, researched the type of Native American home, and constructed it with original materials.   Many students used natural materials that were close to the materials Native Americans used in their regions.  Some students wanted to create a whole scene for the home.

It was a joy to see each student's excitement,  pride, and confidence in their work.  There was also a wonderful sense of admiration for their classmates's work.  A special thank you goes out to all of our parents and project helpers at home!    Many of the students wanted to display their work, while others wanted to take their special project back home to appreciate.  The students' homes will be on display in our library until the end of November.

MEET MISS YUHAS.......

We are so happy to welcome Miss Samantha Yuhas to Team Nautilus as a student teacher working with Ms. Douglas.  She is pursuing a degree in special education and elementary education at California University of Pennsylvania.  Her high school Alma mater is Fort Cherry High School where she graduated in 2008.  She likes reading and going to the beach.  Her new puppy, Riley, keeps her very busy when she is not checking papers.  On the weekend, you can find her working at Shop 'n Save in South Fayette.  Welcome to the team!

YUMMY SCIENCE!

"My hypothesis was correct!"

"Science is SWEET!"

"I LOVE SCIENCE!"

The students on Team Nautilus gathered data to identify the most dominant color in two fun size bags of M&Ms.  By following the steps in the Scientific Method, we were able to collect data and create a bar graph to display our findings.  Enjoy these pictures from our "SWEET" science lab!
